As you grow older and face new experiences, what issue or topic do you think you'll have to stand up and debate most often, whether with friends, family, or society?

Prompt Response: I think the thing I debate most with other people is sports opinions. I have strong opinions about players like Patrick Mahomes, and how he is a fraud. This can happen because many people have strong opinions that they wont change. No matter how much you try to convince someone their opinions wont change. Summary: In class we took more notes on arguments and ethos pathos logos. we also learned about claims and the different types. Reflection: Depending on peoples opinions, arguments can happen easy. Opinions could even come from where you were born.

Write about a truth you were afraid to accept.

Prompt Response: A truth I was afraid to accept was that I might not make it D1. When I was a kid I wanted to be a pro baseball player and was dead-set on getting there. Now that I am more grown I have accepted that it probably wont happen. It is still a possibility as of right now but if it doesn't happen I will be ok. Summary: Today we took notes on argument and Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Reflection: I think that accepting that things might not go how you want is a good thing, so you can make a backup plan.

Write about a fear you have overcome.

Prompt Response: I had a fear of roller coasters. I would never ride the big ones at Six Flags. One time, I went to Dollywood with my cousins, and they made me get on a big one. I really liked it, and now I will ride almost all roller coasters. Summary: Today in class, we did a claims group assignment Reflection: Sometimes trying something new can get rid of fear and show you something you enjoy.

Write about a time when you were judged unfairly.

Prompt Response: A time when I was judged unfairly was when my fifth-grade teachers accused me of something I didn't do, but they still got mad at me. They cornered me after school, demanding that I confess to something I didn't do. I felt awful because they were yelling at me even though I did nothing. This made me really sad for the rest of the week. I was happy when COVID ended 5th grade early, so I didn't have to see the teachers anymore. Summary: Mr Reese wasn't here, so we did a common lit Reflection: I think being judged unfairly is one of the worst experiences that can happen, because you are being affected by something you can't control.

Imagine you are learning about Hispanic/Latino heritage for the very first time. What would you be curious to know about the traditions, foods, music, or celebrations?

Prompt Response: If I were learning about Hispanic/Latino heritage, I’d want to know how people celebrate special days like Día de los Muertos or Cinco de Mayo, and what makes the celebrations different in each country. I’d be curious about the food, like tacos or tamales, and how people make them in different places. I’d also want to learn about the music, like salsa or mariachi, and what it means to the people. Finally, I’d be interested in how family and community are really important in these cultures. Summary: In class, we learned about a thesis statement and wrote overrated things. Reflection: I like Hispanic/Latino food a lot, so I would be excited to try them all for the first time again.

After viewing your classmates’ poem posters, select one presentation that caught your attention. Describe what you enjoyed about it or something new you learned from their work.

Prompt Response: One presentation that caught my attention was Nate Dorsett's poem. I thought it was very neat how he compared life to golfing, because I also golf. I liked the descriptions of the fairway and hitting a ball down it. It was really creative and I thought he worded it well. Summary: In class, we presented our poems. Reflection: Reading poems can be good to learn about how people really feel, and to try a new medium for reading.

In “The Interlopers” by Saki, Ulrich and Georg view each other as interlopers, outsiders intruding on their land and their lives. Think about a time when you felt like an interloper or when someone else felt out of place in your world. How did that situation affect relationships, emotions, or outcomes?

Prompt Response: One time, I felt like this was when someone new joined the baseball team. The same group of kids and I had been playing together from 7U to 10U, and then a new kid named Aidan joined the team. He was pretty good, but no one knew him. As we got to know each other, we became friends, and he ended up being one of my best friends on the team. Summary: In class, there was a sub, so we just did "The Interlopers" story on CommonLit. Reflection: Meeting new people can be a good thing, because you could become good friends.

Of today’s 15 vocabulary words, which three do you think you will use the most in your speaking and writing this semester? Explain why each word feels useful or powerful to you.

Prompt Response: 3 words I will use the most are ambiguous, affection, and affinity. I chose these because I was already familiar with them, so they have been part of my vocabulary for a while. If I already know what it is and what it means, then I won't have any trouble using them. Summary: Today, we worked on our poem cluster activities. Reflection: I think adding words to our vocabulary is a good thing and makes us sound smarter.

It’s Homecoming Week! 🎉 What do you love most about being part of the Lakeside community? How do you show off your school spirit? What is your favorite Homecoming tradition or event?

Prompt Response: The thing I love most about being part of the Lakeside community is its proximity to my house. It is just a 5-minute drive away, so I can sleep late. I show off my school spirit by wearing Lakeside brand apparel to school sometimes, especially when it's free. My favorite Homecoming tradition was going to the elementary school for football. We let the kids out of their cars, then went inside and read a book. I got to see all of my teachers from back then, like in kindergarten. Summary: In class, we took a quiz on the Lawrence Ferlinghetti poem. We then worked on our poem posters. Reflection: Lakeside doesn't have many long-standing, well-known traditions, so I couldn't think of much. I wish we did, though.

Which learning method do you enjoy the most? Class discussions, worksheet work, or hands-on actvities. Select one and tell why.

Prompt Response: I enjoy hands-on activities the most. I like it because it keeps me engaged and learning, so I don't zone out. There aren't many hands-on things you can do in English class, but I like group projects. I like them because they allow me to talk to my friends but still learn. I can socialize and still be educated, so it is the best of both worlds. Summary: In class, we finished our poems and started the poem poster. Reflection: I think all schoolwork should be done in groups, so we can talk and bounce ideas off each other.

Which aspect of creating a poem do you enjoy the most? Tell what it is and explain why.

Prompt Response: I enjoyed coming up with the rhymes the most. I like freestyling even though I'm terrible at it. It is usually jokingly with my friends, so it doesn't make sense. I like coming up with things that rhyme. That was the only part I really enjoyed. Summary: In class, we wrote our poems. Reflection: I think writing poems can be a fun thing to do if you like writing, but I don't.

After reading Lawrence Ferlinghetti's poem "Constantly Risking Absurdity," which explores the poet's daring craft, write about your most absurd personal experience. Describe a single, specific incident that felt ridiculously bold or foolish. Ensure your response is vivid, concise, and captures the essence of absurdity.

Prompt Response: One moment that felt extremely bold or foolish was when I decided to join the football team. The only football experience I had was PE and Madden. I joined because I thought it would be fun, but I had no idea what to do. Luckily, I had some friends to help me learn and get better. I think it turned out for the best because I learned and grew, even though I quit this year. Summary: Today, we analyzed a poem about how poets are like acrobats, and watched a guy walk across the Grand Canyon. Reflection: I think trying something new is a good experience, and being bold can be really good for you.

You are currently working on a soundtrack for selected Emily Dickinson poems. With that in mind, if asked to choose a song to describe your life right now, which song would you select and why?

Prompt Response: If I had to choose a song to describe my life right now, I would pick Eye of the Tiger because I'm really locked in right now. I have lots of extracurricular activities, such as workouts and practices for baseball and rec soccer. When I hear Eye of the Tiger, I think of Rocky and how it was his training montage song. This song gets me pumped up and locked in. Summary: In class today, we took a quiz where we analyzed a few different poems, and then we finished the Emily Dickinson quotes. Reflection: I think having lots of motivation is a good thing, and can lead me to improve my life.

If you were to compose a poem about one aspect of your life, which topic would it fall into and what would your overall life's message be?

Prompt Response: If I composed a poem about one aspect of my life, the topic would growth. I would make it about growth because I feel like I have come a long way from when I was a little kid. That is both physically as well as mentally. My overall life's message would be to battle through hardships because no matter what you go through, it will get better. I think this because I have had some struggles in my life, but I turned out ok, I think. Summary: In class, we worked on the Emily Dickinson quotes. Reflection: I think that struggles make you grow, and that can be very beneficial.

You’ve been in American Literature for 4.5 weeks now. How has the class been going for you so far?

Prompt Response: Class has been going pretty good so far. I feel like I have been on top of my work and not fallen behind. The class isn't that hard, so I don't struggle. I don't like sitting all the way to the side of the room, though. I would prefer to sit toward the back, middle area. Summary: In class, we analyzed 3 Emily Dickinson poems and started our Dickinson Soundtrack Project Reflection: I think I made the right choice choosing American Literature over AP Lang, because I heard what they were doing, and it sounds terrible.

Describe one thing that makes you different from other people.

Prompt Response: One thing that makes me different from other people is my athletic ability. While I'm not a generational athlete, I think I am above average. That isn't super unique, but I think my specific set of skills could be. I am good at sports that require hand-eye coordination, and ones where you need to sprint, but not long-distance running. This comes from me playing baseball at and young age, and spending some time playing soccer and football. I also golf a little, but that doesn't require much athleticism. Summary: I wasn't in class that day Reflection: I think that you don't have to be exceptionally good at something to be special, and being different can be a good thing.

Dickinson uses the metaphor of a funeral to describe her inner struggles. What metaphor would you use to describe your own mind?

Image
Prompt Response: I would compare my mind to a bouncy house, because my thoughts are bouncing around from one thing to another. It can be hard for me to focus on one thing unless I really care about it. My mind will start to wander if I get bored. I try not to lose focus during school, but sometimes I can't help it. I think this is a pretty accurate comparison.  Summary: I drew my heart split between logic and emotion.  Reflection: I think that having an active mind can be a good thing, but you have to be able to control it when you need to.
